CORNWALL INSPIRATION

I have had the pleasure of spending every summer for the last decade on the north coast of Cornwall.

I’ve always been attracted to the fresh sea air, clear light and dramatic coastline. Although I spend the rest of year in the gorgeous Georgian town of Bath, I always find myself missing Cornwall, making it all the more special to return too.

Through out my years creating art, I have always been incredibly detail orientated. I found comfort in the precision and care for each brush stroke. Over time however I realised just how draining this method can be. During my time at the end of university, I started experimenting with abstract art with each brush stroke becoming random and care free. I used the shapes and colours I could see as inspiration whilst layering different types of paint to create a more textured surface.
Although I love creating realistic pieces which challenge myself, it is equally rewarding to paint an abstract piece which allows more freedom to be experimental. This piece is called 'Another day' and is based on a vision of Batheaston as seen from the side of the river which I would frequent during my lunch breaks at Gather Cafe. It is a scene I looked at almost every day for over a year and became so embedded in mind- I decided to get it down on canvas and loved how art turned out.

It was during my Art Degree in Falmouth that I decided to benefit from my surroundings and start creating oil paintings. Although the summer time in Cornwall was particularly beautiful, I found the wild nature of the sea during the winter months much more inspirational. The dark moody blue tones mixed with the crisp white waves crashing down proved to give my paintings more depth and life, they became dangerous but strangely comforting.

FLOWERS

When focusing on still life, I decided there was no better subject matter than flowers. Without realising, my mother is one of my biggest influences- she had lent me a 'roses' book which processed the most beautiful arrangements of flowers which I knew I had to try to paint and replicate in detail. These pieces (especially in the gold frames) look almost old and vintage. I find it is always complimentary to mix contemporary with traditional paintings.

CITY OF BATH

As an artist, I can't help but be influenced by my constant surroundings. I am born and bred in Bath and have felt very grateful to have grown up in the city.As a Georgian town it is renowned for the buildings including Pulteney Bridge and Bath Abbey. These types of sketchbook pieces were just that- an experiment to see if I was able to sketch different areas of the town.Using these pieces I have created post cards and prints to be displayed in homes as a tribute to this historical city.
